Attention Canandaigua sailors....
Heads up for all you potential Windsurfing miscreants out there. Be warned there is a new sheriff in town. Yesterday while battling his way through 10-24 Westerly gusts to get to open water Shortboard Joe opening defied local authorities by sailing just inside one of the outside buoys marked "No swimming" that surround the official swimming area. Fortunately there were no swimmers in the water at the time or otherwise their lives surely would have been at risk when Joe's 8 inch wake came crashing ashore, a veritable windsurfing tsunami.
Witnessing this act of brazen disregard for law, order and the American way one of Canandaigua's finest jumped into the saddle of his ATV to deal with the perpetrator. Joe was dressed down and nearly handcuffed.
So beware and be forewarned, Johnny Law is watching!

It's good to see the strong arm of the law (as opposed to the weaker arm?) out there tackling the pressing issues on Canandaigua Lake. Don't worry about the boaters who anchor and drink "soda" on hot days.....nooooooo, I almost got leveled out in Ontario last June buy some idiot who didn't know the rules of the road. And that reminds me of the time Ken sailed up behind a boat at Durand and a gentleman was being gratified in the back of his boat. Don't worry about the boaters, it's those trouble making windsurfers. All of this has to be stemming from the incomprehensible death/injury statistics that surround windsurfers and the blatant misuse of their craft.
Did the sheriff hassle him about no life jacket?
Doug

Help take a bite out of crime! Makes it hard to respect the cops that are actually doing the community good....and there are plenty. Maybe it was just a slow day on the roads.

This was not a bona fide protector of the Community, it was in fact a bloated Park official with time on his hands.
The Police have much better things to do.

Talked to Joe,
He explained that this guy was pretty much a glorified crossing guard (my words) with a megaphone. Didn't want our type around here (to quote the beach patroller). Threatened to call the police. It sounds like Joe got him all worked up.....wish I was there to witness this exchange. WD

Fellas, you have me grinning ear to ear with these posts. I second Doug, it would have been fun to see Joe get that guy worked up.
Ok what I am about to write shouldn't be in this thread (sorry doug for messing up the system). Last Sunday a few of us had a little slogging session down at the pond. Someone left a 32cm (i think that was length) fin resting against the tree. My guess it is either Joe's or Doug's. Check your gear guys, I will get it to you one way or another.

I had a guy yelling at me over a bull horn last summer at Canandaigua. It was a cold day around 8pm (no one was swimming or even thinking about swimming) and I was trying to make my way upwind from the launch. Every time I tacked back towards the swim area at about 50 ft off he would go on the the bull horn. "Windsurfer, windsurfer stay away from the swim area," it was real hard to understand due to the pour sound quality. On the third tack back, he started in again. I dropped my sail, raised my hands in a Y shape and Yelled "shut the f**k up!" He stopped.
Unfortunately, he was gone by the time I came back to shore.

If you were hired for the summer to patrol the swim area and given the training & authority to use a bull horn wouldn't you use it? These kind of people like many others who come upon us in the water seem to think that we have power steering and can drive to any spot we please specially cutting the corner of the swimming area, like a jet-skier jumping the wake just off the back of a passing boat. We are ALL outlaws. Anytime a sailor struggles with the law I think it is because we are underpowered or so far down wind that we're caught in a wind hole. I never had an issue in 25MPH winds, it seems that is when all the beach goers have gone. Nothing like making a bad day worse by getting accosted by the big arm (belly) of the law. I'm going to choose to CUT the grass at home rather than getting caught CUTTING the corner of the swimming area at The Club. H20 Rick PS please send wind. Wednesday perhaps?

I am taking tomorrow off to hopefully windsurf. I have one personal day to use up by next Tuesday and I am doing it tomorrow. So that will either jinx us, or redeem some of the points I feel like I have been earning around the house. Today isn't seeming so bad. I am aching for a Lake Ontario day. WD

No thumbs up from me, too busy trying to find my binoculars. If the motion of the Ocean floats his boat that is fine with me....I was just making an enforcement priority comparison between the two....which one is the more severe offense if you want to get down to the work of the law? Cutting through an empty swim area or "public lewdness"?....or to trump both of those, Joe's bare Heine during a wetsuit change?

Hey Joe,
Those are the exact phone hours my parents keep, I think the same goes for Spencer Scorza's grandparents.
I'd better keep my mouth shut, Joes will be sailing in the Gorge for much longer in one month than I will get all year.
I spoke with Trey on Friday night he was in Seattle already and was picking up Steve & Chris in Portland on Saturday. I'll get an update from them throughout the week.
H20 Rick (will work for wind)
