Just a heads up for the risk takers out there. It maybe a long shot and it is a long ride but I'm heading out to Oswego, perhaps Selkirk tomorrow.
Could be an epic adventure.
Could be a bust.

I'm down with that. Got my classic 30 minute session in at long pond before the wind shut down to slogging speed. I might go to fairhaven then Oswego if needed. But...I may have some female obligations depending on how the night goes.

Dave, I understand. Here is the website for Rudy's near Oswego where I was told the gang from Syracuse launches. www.rudyshot.com/If the predictions hold I'm heading out there. If it's deserted or just plain weird I'll probably head down the road to Selkirk for safety's sake. The more I type the less chance there will be wind. The gods are notoriously fickle. wd

Kid,
Did you go to Rudy's? I sailed out of my nice lady friends house again on the Webster side of the bay outlet. Sailed up to Durand to visit the others, Gary-Dave B.-Kinger- Mikey Z it filled in real good as the sun made an attemp to stay out, 5.0-6.0m was the sail sizes. Once the clouds won out the wind got light and as Kinger said shut off like a light. I for one can confirm that, as I struggled to make it back to my car a few miles down wind. Got to within a 4 or 5 house lots from the pier and luckey for me the Sheriffs boat leaving the bay saw me and was nice enough to give me a ride home. Otherwise I would of had to continue my body drag along the board for at least another 20 mins. H20 Rick

waterauthorityrick,
You had to ask. First, congratulations to everyone who had the good sense not to join me in my quest to find the Holy Grail of Eastern Lake Ontario's best launch. Anyway here's what I learned...
My first stop was in fact Rudy's. The Ontario buoy was gusting W16-24 and Rudy's is supposed to be a favored launch for Syracuse sailors. There is a small parking lot there and somenice grass to rig on. The shoreline is composed of small polished stones, but clean without any real hazards.Unfortunately West means the wind is off shore, I mean real off shore, No wind, no sailors.
Next Stop Selkirk State Park...another Syracuse favorite. Selkirk was windy with lots of white caps and nice waves but...completely onshore. I 've seen that at Montana...it really sucks. There is a small parking lot next to a small swimming area. To the west there is a long stretch of uninhabited shoreline that is just beyond a cement embankment that that you could negotiate if you really wanted to. To the east is a Webster-like pier that is just dieing to eat your board. No sailors and the launch is hmmm...to begin with the lifeguards (yea they where really out there despite the fact that the park was almost deserted the water was frigid) anyway they said you couldn't windsurf there legally however the Park ended at the cement spillway....
Ok I went this far.....Next Stop Sandy Bottom. Very small, and the man at the gate said that windsurfing was strictly forbidden and he has never seen anyone even attempt it. This was in fact the mantra I heard all day from the Park Employees...windsurfing? huh? Maybe I had the wrong park.
So why not go to Southwick?
Henderson Harbor- windsurf heaven, a mere 150 miles away! Nice place....no wind no windsurfers...(kiters either) Meanwhile Wendy is telling me that the Oswego buoy is blowing 17-24.. Truthfully a 7.5 would have worked but....
There's wind at Durand...only two hours away!
Just for nutss and giggles I stopped by Fairhaven on the way home. Not much there either so I dropped my drawers and went for a run around the park in a feeble effort to justify the $30 worth of gas I spent and the $7 for the State Parks.
Bottom line....stay home and if you must drive...GO TO HAMBURG!

Ahhhhhh, the tireless forum editor removed your frustrated outburst. Remember "Thingy" Miller last summer? The forum program has a "family friendly word replacer" that prevents possibly offensive language.....not sure why your obvious explitive was replaced by "nutss" instead of "poop". WD

Jim King was at Durand; he almost died out there!
When I was hauled home by the sheriff he asked me if any of the "parachute" guys were out on the water, but there were none. Thingy Miller was home on the couch sick as a thingy.
Mikey ZZZZZZ don't forget to message me regarding the dry suit, you should at least try it on.

Anyone ever try to sail or kite on mendon ponds. I did a bunch of snow kiting there this winter and it was good in a west wind. Park lifeguards don't know squat about the rules. I was up at southwick last week and talked with the park manager Spencer about kiting there. He had no problem with it as long as we were away from people; the same thing applies in Geneva. I went through this same BS last year up at Hamlin (you can sail there is a west wind), they have a boat launch that is a rocky, board eating nightmare and tons of sandy beach that you cannot launch from, STUPID. I am going to ride up there on my motorcycle some time next week and talk with the Hamlin park ranger and find out what the deal is. What is the big deal launching over rocks and launching on sand? If I don't get the answer I want I am conacting the NYS parks department (again). NYS is so idiotic when it comes to using natural resources.

David,
Like I said I've had the same experience at the Parks that you have had. Real inconsistent....I have a feeling if we just did it no one would say anything and if they did complain we could ignore them. Besides I haven't been arrested since my college days. I live 4 miles from Mendon and never sailed there myself but I did meet a young couple from Germany who did for a while while they lived here. They launched from the boat launch area which is fine. Room to rig and easy to get out. For kiting I guess the beach would be better. I don't think anyone would hassle you however for windsurfing a weed fin would quickly be a necessity. So David where were you yesterday? Lynn and Chris were at Montana on a 11 and 8 meter kite along with yours truly on a 6.5 sail. The wind was attually not bad, steady a steady high teens to low twenties. ENE makes for some strange waves and the foggy horizon made the whole thing surreal. Lynn was kind enough to give me some hints on my sail flip, or rather my lack there of....I hope there's no final exam!

Windkid,
Montana is tough because it is a starboard tack on the way out ....I believe. We predominantly sail strongly on Port tack, jumping etc... (......I could have these goofed up). So NE in Rochester is like the Kona winds in Hawaii....only Robby Naish can handle it...... WD David, To the best of my Knowledge..... people used to sail on Mendon Pond back in the day. Randy Garrett and Penn Sheldon, two Fairport teachers, used to sail there afterwork.........in the 80's. Doug

I missed yesterday because I was coming off back to back nights in the ICU, slept for 3 hrs, haircut, went to see my grandfather in the hospital, had a meeting for grad school until 7:30. Basically life BS that has finally caught up with me a bit. All done now though. I am so fed up with the west wind crap here it is literally making me want to leave. I just emailed NYS parks to see what the deal is with Hamlin. if a boat launch is there it should not matter how we get on the water. I'll keep you guys up to date. As for mendon ponds I am going to give it a shot next time there is a good west wind. Small and slimy but if it blows west it can't be too much worse than the pond.

Meany forum police here. I am questioning the "sunday wind" content of the last couple of posts. Maybe it's my obsesive compulsiveness or need for organization.....at least in my windsurfing world. Time for a new thread? If I'm being a "thingy" let me know. I can take it...I might act a little put out when I see you, might tell you to rig the wrong sail size......might call the windline after it dies, but I can handle it. I"m not gonna take my ball/forum and leave the play ground.........the humidity is getting me. Hot Sticky non-windydoug
