Back by unpopular demand here’s your 1footwilly report from Hamburg.
Yesterday in an act of total desperation I made the two hour journey from Sodus to Hamburg in search of wind. I was still haunted by the fact that last time I made the trip I found some wind but also wind holes the size of school buses. When the best thing you can say about a session is that you made it back to the starting line than you know you had a lackluster day indeed. So imagine my joy when I arrived at Locksley and the wind was blowing 24-30 something. Gusty maybe, holes no. Trailer guy Mark was there along with the eerie couple Joe and his wife, Jim from buffalo and our own inimitable James King. Sails ranged from little eerie’s 3.3 to Buffalo Jim’s 5.0, which proved to be too big in the long run. Sailors arrived throughout the day. I counted about 14 by mid-day including Tech Ted, Greg da giant, and little red helmet head, a 99 lb. gutsy girl who took on waves three times her size without hesitation. At one point she approached me on the beach towards the end of the day awash in that sea of adrenaline we all know and love so dearly and out of nowhere exclaimed ...”Oh my God! It was like a Rodeo out there! Whooa boy, that was sooo Great!” For some reason I thought maybe my wife had or should have a sister but that’s another story, one better told by Joe Herbert.
Like the subject states the wind was out of the NW and a bit onshore so weaving your way through the Rocky Mountain breaks was part of the deal. The lake is very low which seemed to extend the breaking waves but also seemed to spread them out which made for some real nice Rodeo riding on the way in. There was an issue with rocks kissing fins where the swimming area used to be and I did notice a few windsurfers auditioning for “Rinsed in Hamburg, 2” but for the most part getting out was not a big problem. As for me I rigged a 4.5 and sailed the 85 RRD. That setup worked the whole time and was one of the best sessions I’ve had on that board which has not seen much time on the water at all so I had no complaints. I invented a new move as well. I call it the 1Footwilly WTF Forward Loop Flip Flop. In order to do this maneuver it helps immensely to have a lame foot. The trick is to hit a large ramp as the wind shifts directly at you. With your lame foot in front you let the nose dip suddenly and by accident which throws you and your rig forward and down in what I would ironically call a “nose” dive. This gives the appearance of someone attempting a forward loop, which is in fact closer to a forward poop if the truth be known. I did receive some complimentary words later in the parking lot on the attempt which I accepted most humbly.
So there’s my post Doug…ha may this be a lesson to you to watch out for what you wish for!
