My three year hiatus from Lake Erie continues. I had planned to head to Hamburg, and even check out Woodlawn, but my kids were just way too much fun Tuesday morning so I got a late start. Couple that with plans for dinner with friends who love a mile from Long Pond, and you can connect the dots.
Im glad I ended up there with Scott (skymongrel) and Art. Scott was ripping on his new 6.3 Ezzy when I arrived and soon came in for a break as he was spent from the speed burns he was getting with that big sail in the building winds. Long Pond regular Dan was there and did an awesome job sailing on his HiFly board and twist tip Neil Pryde sail. I rigged up my 5.2 and went out into what were gusty and inconsistent winds. Nukin and Slogging. Art arrived and his calming presence and 5.2 soothed the wind gods of Long Pond and things got good. For the most part shore to shore 5.2 and better winds hammering us as we blasted. Scott rigged down a bit to a still powerful cammed sailworks and the three of us shared the pond with a kiter who I believe was Bob? All of us having a great time, hooting and hollering and smiling ear to ear. Art was perfectly dialed in and nailed jibe after jibe after jibe.
Late afternoon and Mikey Z's old buddy Kenny arrived to have a go in the big winds on his old windkid Starboard Carve while a lady friend paddled the roiling pond.
About the time I got off the water a sailor was arriving and rigged an older 4.0 Neil Pryde RAF CAM Dynamic an an F2 Sunset. Easily recognizable as old school gear, but the Sunset was one of the best racers of its day. As we watched, Scott mentioned that this mystery sailor had noted he had not sailed in a couple years.
Seconds after enter the water, that old school gear was going as fast as any of my newer stuff, and was in the hands of an obviously very skilled sailor. Some rips across the pond and a chop hop or two later, and Joe Flores introduced himself as he came back to shore. I don't know if any of you have met him of know him from the past, but we need to get this guy sailing more. I told him as much, and snapped a bunch of pics of him tearing it up before I left.
It's building at IBay outlet right now.........
