The wind was erratic at Durand, with a couple of kites launching way up near the houses....gotta find out more about this launch and associated parking. WHY?!
They are charging for parking at Durand now! Developing story.
Anyhow, Art, Ken, Scott, and I gave it the college try and had some success depending on what you had rigged. My 6.6 worked okay, and some nice ramps were scattered around for jumping.
A German family showed up on a trek that began in Boston. They had a truck packed with watersports gear and Dad, Mom, and one of the kids windsurfed. The boy windsurfed on a cool looking Naish 1.4 sail. The Dad was throwing some cool sail tricks near the beach. One began as a duck jibe that ended with him being back winded on the other side of the sail. Cool.
Windkid and Ontario Buoy are heading to the Gorge in a couple days, so the summer wind group will be a shell of what it normally is. Hope we get Gorge updates.

I had a great session, finally hitting the winds right, with the right rig and board. I sailed my 124 liter board (Fanatic Shark) with my ole 6.0 Neil Pryde VX (cammed). Sailed til I couldn't sail no more! Arms and legs cramping from overuse. Yea...you know the feeling!
As the Coast Guard data below shows the winds were predominately WNW with an occassional NW. It was interesting to note that the strongest winds were usually closest to shore and occasionally I was barely hanging on to the 6.0. When the winds went NW it could be found further out.
Early in the session I easily sailed upwind to where the kiters were launching from at the westmost end of the beach. It seems like this is where the wind always is when there is a lot of west in it. Hmm...gotta check that launch out sometime.
Here's the Charlotte Coast Guard data which seems to be spot on with my sailing session.

I know some of the kites have been moving as far West (toward the houses) as possible at Durand b/c the wind has been better. I'm guessing its because the land is lower and allows wind to flow through.
I've been sticking to the outlet this year and have had alot of good wind. I think last time I went out from Montana my wind outlasted the 2 kites at the far west end of Durand. Greg mentioned something about a thermal but I'm not sure what causes it.
I'm hoping to head out tonight around 5. The 2 Chris's (non-forum users) are planning to go to Durand at 3 & I'll meet them there if its working out or check out Montana. It'll be a quick one for me & then I'm off to play kickball with the wife.

Gorge sailing has been good, think since Joe has been there from June 29 he has I believe only 2 no sailing days. Some days it has been only 15-20, but a needed relief from the days it has been 25-30 and those who have gone know the sailing is from AM to PM. Ted & Chuck arrived Monday afternoon. Guess a pretty good wind day on Tuesday, but had to follow the wind from one launch site to Doug's. As far as my post regarding Joe's purchases - - - - - for those who do not know me, I am a bit crazed. Wouldn't you be after living with Joe Herbert for 31 years? I knew he was buying a board, we had a discussion about how much cash he was taking and how I didn't like him having that much on him. So no need for anyone to worry that they blew him in!

Got a lucky sail in at Durand on 7/13. Arrived just in time to ride out a series of weather cells moving past Durand. Headed out towards one cell to make one last pass before heading to shore to wait it out, but slipped on the deck of my board mid-jibe, popped out of my harness and spent several anxious minutes while winds gusted up to 36 mph. Made it back to shore as the cells left and took most of the wind with them. But hey two days in a row in the middle of July, not bad.

Good info here from everybody! Thanks for making the time to post some info about what you are up to. Awesome to see Scott out for two day in a row. Will need to get more info from the kite folks in regards to the far wester launch. Kite Corner?
