I took my 1st lesson in the spring of 07 in Pensicola, Fl with a 14 Contra and a wide board in winds that picked up suddenly. So I learned how to get beat up & what happens when you have the right kite on the wrong day. Luckily I got to take a 2nd lesson in the fall in the outer banks thru Kittie Hawk kites on a 12 meter SwitchBlade 2 and had a blast! I was a little over powered when the wind picked up again (again) but it was very managable and I was able to keep my ground but not go upwind in both directions...my transitions where ugly but they got the job done.
In any case I'm ready to buy and I'd like some local experienced help. It seems every school in the country uses cabrinha b/c "they're the safest." There's also a lot of talk online about the SBII handling wind gusts well and even having the widest wind range. But it doesn't take long to realize Cabrinha carries a big price along with its big talk. I know about Meyers in Buffalo & I've spoke with him briefly but I'd like to get as many opinions as I can. I also know enough to go with a bow kite or at least a hybrid and I'm reluctant to go older than 07, though I might if I can find decent used gear.
Any help is appreciated and I'll try let everyone know what I end up with. I'm in Irondequiot and hoping to meet up with anyone who doesn't mind a newbie tagging along. I also have a boat and I'm working on ways to use it to launch & land so I never wind up in the parking lot at Durand!

Rider1200, or maybe I'll coin your name as "Newbie"
The one guy you need to talk with is Lynn Davis his home number is 323-1035 he has purchased the most gear and knows what works best in Rochester. I trust others will join in on this forum. Richard Miller also has a boat and experience with launching a kite off it.
Welcome!

Thanks for the Welcome! I knew I shouldn't have used the word newbie but I've had worse nicknames.
I know Richard Miller, my wife works with him. He's the one who suggested I stray from Cabrinha. I haven't had a chance to talk to Lynn yet but I plan to before I buy. Thanks for the advice!
BTW I got a chance to ride Rick's Icesurfer over the winter and it was blast!

Rider1200,
Look at the photo's on the "odds n ends" section of the website there is photo documentation of you learning to windsurf on the ice board.
