Hopefully some entertaining and enlightening narrative will follow this quick run down of the late afternoon happenings at Durand. Lake Ontario's call is the title, because as I understand it Webster Park saw some sailing, and two kites danced against the setting sun at Charlotte.
At Durand as memory serves me: Bill, Joe, Art, Brian, Gus (coming out of retirement!), Doug, Mark R., David, Steve (tall one with a Cooper mini and great trailer!), Steve (shorter and later in the day), Kel (who is moving to Syracuse but will still kite here..and fix windmeters!) Doug Kowenhouven (kite), Doc Miller (kite), Ed Schmitt (kite trainer).
As the sun set, two kites could be seen flying up at Charlotte (Brent?). It was quite a site and I tried to capture it with my camera. I'm not sure of all kite and sail sizes, but I spent some time on my 5.8 and 95L and finished the night off on my 6.6 and 116L. I wasn't having much fun around 5:30 or so when most of you guys decided to call it a session and head home with smiles. I hit nary a jibe and was not relaxed. I had my 6.6. rigged already and headed back out. Doc Miller and Kel were going out as well, and as luck would have it the wind freshened (and turned more North) and we had a great session until literally the sun set on us. With a clearer head and some Joe Herbert advice I got at least 8 jibes and was stoked. The sunset was quite a sight. Doc Miller came off the water only after the first stars were becoming evident. No joke. Needed some Mikey (Francisco ) Z glow sticks! Great to see everybody! WD That's my story and I'm sticking to it. What's yours?

Yesterday was probably the toughest conditions you could ask for here at Sodus, but at least I was riding. It was a true six foot mogul field, and to make matters worse, I was still hungover from the Northeast on Tues. and Weds. The sunset was a repeat of last Wednesday; it's ok if it's blinding when the waves are glassy. 3 Northeasterly Supremes served up in one week!!!?.

Did you guys have rough waters yesterday, or was it just here? Maybe I just got spoiled this past week, but I couldn't find many lines yesterday. Perhaps the swell was still trying to go one way, but the wind was blowing it another. The pier does not help on a west, but usually the northwest is manageable. Would it have been worth a trip toward your end?

Here's the skinny. Joe, Brian, Mark, Ted and Art were at Webster when I arrived about 2 thirty. According to them the wind had just picked up and they were about to head out on 5.8's and 6.3's. Along the shoreline was a band of pathogenic sludge knee deep at least. Real inviting stuff. I got on the phone and checked in with Ken. He let me know that Durand had just jumped to 18 gusting to 20 something. I decided to head out there as did Art. When we arrived it looked light. So Art rigged a 6.5 and I went with a 7.5 and decided it was a good day to try out the Super Sport. To our surprise Joe showed up. Apparently Webster died right off. Brian and Mark soon arrived as did the wind and sun. The rest is history. I was a little overpowered on the 7.5 but enjoyed the ride. Eventually I went out on a 5.8 and a smaller board, complete with a boom cam that I failed to turn on. The Super Sport was comfortable, road upwind nicely as well as downwind. Joe thought I was pretty sluggish but maybe Joe's just fast. Anyhow he claims he was overtaking me the whole afternoon, but since he was always behind me I can't verify that. I did notice him from time to time downwind of me making real progress, but he was so far away to be sure if he was going fast or just barely planing. Brian on the other hand clearly kicked I disagree on his trusty Hi-fly, we both were barely in control in the swell at times, our big fins making control a real challenge, but it was great fun. All in all a wonder sunlit session.
The Millie picture in that earlier post was for Joe's significant other Eileen who wanted to know who the "Millie" was that I referred to in an earlier remark I made about "Millie's" brownies. I thought Eileen deserved to see the competition.

Pat, I had the same feeling about the water not setting up any consistent wave/swell pattern. I would assume you are right on with your reason why. Durand was a little more disorganized than normal in my opinion. Doug

I was out of town for the weekend but the kites you saw at Charlotte were most likely Chris A & Chris V...they get out alot but mostly stick to Charlotte, after meeting them there last time I can see why! They have another friend named Simon who's just getting into it, he may have been there as well. Now that its after labor day, Did they take the ropes down at Durand?
Glad to hear everyone had fun!

Ropes are down and the beach is beautiful! The poo rivers have dried up due to the drought and the beach is very wide. The sand is smooth and clean. Man, I didn't realize that so many new kiters were popping up!! Two Chris's? In addition to Chris K., And a Simon? Do these guys know about this forum and the website? Get em hooked up....strength in numbers and camaraderie. I did get a distant but cool sunset and silhouette shot of two kites at Charlotte. I'll get it posted. WD

Hey, I also wanted to mention to all the new people learning to kite that if you are learning to fly to follow some rules, not trying to be a dick just don't want to lose access.
-Fly downwind from the launching area, NOT upwind or in the middle of it.
-Fly with a buddy in case something goes wrong you have back up.
-Fly well out into the water to avoid beach goers and do not fly in a straight onshore wind, side shore is best.
-NEVER ask somebody unfamiliar to land your kite, if you cannot self land then learn or as mentioned fly with a buddy.
-Always launch with your kite toward the water (you on land) and keep it low out over the water until you have complete control, even then keep it at 12:00 as little as possible unless you are actively riding.
Again, not trying to be a dick but just want to keep Durand/Seneca open to kiting, one big accident and it will be over.
Think wind!
