Windsurf or Kite, lets hear about your session. Word of mouth says that some kites were out at Charlotte. Rider 1200 must have scored. Montana was busy place for the windsurfing crowd. The head count included Bill, Ken, Joe, Gary, Art, Teddy, Rick and Doug. Doc Miller on a kite. I could summarize here, but I arrived late and sailed 6.5 for a while on a 95L then a 116L board. Nailed 0 jibes and stayed dry on two. Felt like I hadn't been on a board in months. I got a few photo's before I rushed to rig, also shot what I feel is my best video to date. Steady camera, good subjects close up and nice waves. It'll take time to get it up. Pics on the photo page by sometime tonight. Add your session thoughts below. Windydoug

I thought I nailed all my jibes until Joe corrected me yesterday. The helmet cam did reveal a lot of underwater footage so Joe must have been right. Actually I had a Doug day afternoon, no real jibes but stayed dry for some "turns"
Question,
Why were Ted and Joe's hair dry at the end of the session? You vote
A. They never fall B. They wear bathing caps. (yellow or pink) C. All of the above
Some highlights from yesterday-
Ken, da surfer Jones riding the froth to shore after a 10 mile downwind attempt to reach Charlotte.
Formula Board Rick doing a slam jibe that was more slam then jibe.
Gary....actually arriving without shutting down the wind!
Dr. Miller's kite boarding 101 attended by the gallery.
Art's sailing both Durand and Montana....we expect an expert comparsion posted on that.
Millie's brownies.

Hey Bill, Here's my Durand to Montana story ;
Stopped by Durand to watch the kiters, Lynn, Jason, Gregg, & a couple more showed up. No windsurers in sight_but I deceided to rig-up (5.8) and sail.
After an hr. to 1.5 hrs, I noticed several sails darting in and out of Montana beach. I packed up and headed down the lake to Montana.
Durand / Montana comparison ; Outside wind condition was similar, 5.8 sail w/105lt. board for me. BIG swell outside at Durand_although getting past the shore break on a NE was challenging. Definitely easier getting out @ Montana on a NE blow, swell not quite as big_but worth the move just to sail with my windsurfing buddies.

Hey Art,
So it's sounds like Montana is still the preferred launch in a NE, that's good to know. Seems like we have had a lot more Easterlies this year than in the past.
Tomorrow looks like NW, so maybe it's back to Durand.

Folks,
After checking the graphs from yesterday I determined that I was a bit of a wind killer. As soon as I stopped clicking pictures and rigged up the wind dropped off by about 10mph (according to the slightly shadowed meter). So...props to Gwind for not only not skunking the wind, but from what I heard and saw, owning the conditions. Joe and I had a burger afterwards and he commented on how Gary was sailing really nicely. Also, I am going to need more possible answers to the question about Joe and Ted's hair. Three choices is not enough. My explaination for Teddy's hair being perfect is that everything that guy puts his hands on is "highly tuned"...from his Audi windsurfing ride, to his quiver of Ezzy sails, to his sleek ergonomic kitchen (I got a tour last year). When the world is so dialed in you can't help but to nail every jibe. Joe??...well his nickname is Shortboard isn't it??? A man in his element. 'Nuff said. I have to say that watching Rick blast across the opening to Irondequoit Bay was pretty cool. The waves peel really nicely just out past the breakwalls. I couldn't get far enough up wind to chance a run to the other side though.
BTW, did Bill just jinx Durand by mentioning it on the forum???!!! WD

Since I have my own private parking spot, observation deck, grassy rigging and running water to rinse off sand just EAST of the BAY. Could it be that I am sailing at the EAST BAY spot? Well let's not jump to fast at coining a phrase. I was pleasantly surprised with the fun I had on the Fat Boy Formula.
Windkid I do want to cast my vote the answer is likely "B" Also for your information that Slam Jibe you saw was one of many water temperature data collection points I gathered throughout the day.
Windy Doug, I would like to offer some data on your review of the wind charts for Wednesday and the comment of (slightly shadowed meter) The data for the time slots that I was on the water showed a wind direction of 50 to 60 degrees so to consider the 50 degrees the nearest shadow would be the bathrooms at Richardson Beach Park in Kingston Ontario. The only shadow occurred when one gets tempted in too close to the pier on a glassy wave. The other issue of yours was the feeling that you haven't been on a board in a few months.. Consider the starboard tack required in the NE wind direction and the waves associated with it. First we mostly sail from shore in port tack and the waves are a easier when we do it often. Our muscle memory is not in tune with the NE direction (I'm using it for my excuse feel free to use it for yours)
It is my opinion that everyone who kept their boards moving in the 16mph avg winds should pat themselves on the back for being efficient windsurfers.
Jonesy I was considering a blasting run to the Charlotte pier myself only to recall the fractured boom front end I was using kept me at Bay (pun intended)
I love the short ride from my house to the launch site but miss rigging and hanging with you guys after the session. There was one time many years ago that I was so psyched about the sailing session that I swam across the channel to talk with Miller & Scorza afterward.

AGHHH ;D, it is so good to hear you guys are getting wind. Wednesday I left my parent's house in Rome and headed to Philly to hangout with a few friends from highschool that live around there. It has been a great trip and I leave in the morning only to head to Watkins Glen for a sailing/wine tasting trip. Yes we are sailing to wineries . Any who, it will be good to get back to rochester on saturday so that I am at least close to the water and my gear. - mike

Ok here's yet another boring head cam vid. For fun you can try and find the windsurfer. Ted, Gary, Joe, Art and Rick are all in it but not so easy to find. I never got a shot of Ken, he was halfway to Hamlin before I started shotting.

Doug, I am as superstitious as the next guy but I knew Wed would be a big day even though I 'talked about in on the forum' because Chris A told me windsports are like Golf: Frustrating 70% of the time but so worth it for the 30% of good times...Chris and I had both searched for wind 2 times with no luck so the law of averages said Wed was on!
Charlotte was fantastic! I realize it would be a long way to haul a Windsurfer but the beach is wide open...its got to be a football field wide and at least a 1/2 mile long. There were maybe 4 people on the whole thing and two of them were a young couple who just bought a kite but were afraid to come out in those conditions.
The water is shallow for a surprising long way and the pier blocks the NE waves if you get close enough, great for beginners. If you want waves all you have to do is head NW and they get exponentially bigger! Starting rampy and turning to rollers as you go out. So you can pick what size/style waves you want to ride in! As I got further out the waves where every bit as tall as I am and a good 20 yards apart with nice smooth water in between.
If Water Authority Rick hadn't shut down my Q&A the other week with his 'wait for a question to be answered before you ask another' I bet Kel or Doc Miller could have given me some pointers on launching off one 5 footer & floating to the next one. Haha, I'm just messing w/you Rick! I was actually trying NOT to launch most of the time for fear of putting the kite in the wrong place and slamming into the next wave ribs 1st. I did manage a couple of smaller jumps before Chris asked me if I was cold b/c I was turning pink (I don't have a wetsuit yet)...I told him that pink had to be better than purple or blue!
Highlights would be the size of my eyes as waves as tall as I am approached and possibly when I got my board stuck in my lines...thats right, board stuck in the lines flying over my head just out of reach, I had to crash the kite to get it out.
Suuper Super fun in the water and some good times jumping on land after the session. I have some video I'll put up when I find time. For now I have to go look for a wetsuit.

Here's a Picture of Millie. She doesn't make brownies as good as Eileen, but she has the looks I adore.

Finally got the video off the camera. Its just some goofing around on the beach after the session. The warning label should read 'wait 30 minutes after eating before you watch!'
Chris A has the full wetsuit and wool cap on, I'm the red-lookin one. Sorry about the shaking, the camera's image stabilization was no match for my body's attempt to return to 98.6.
Wish we had some (less shaky) water shots but time was short and neither of us wanted to put the kites down.
