I'm out of commission today but look at tomorrow.
TONIGHT WEST WINDS TO 30 KNOTS BECOMING NORTHWEST 20 TO 25 KNOTS. SHOWERS LIKELY. WAVES 5 TO 8 FEET BUILDING TO 6 TO 9 FEET.
SUNDAY NORTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 25 KNOTS DIMINISHING TO 10 TO 20 KNOTS. CHANCE OF SHOWERS. WAVES 5 TO 8 FEET SUBSIDING TO 3 TO 5 FEET.
Not like last weekend in Hamburg but good. On the other hand we need to remember Rick's words of wisdom regarding the worst thing about wind in Rochester.....morning comes....or something like that.

Mark R., Gary, Matt, hippie guy, Brian, another unknown sailor?, and myself were all out on Long Pond for a exceptionally gusty session Saturday afternoon. I think most of us were sailing between 5.0 and 4.2m. I saw Brian take a very hard fall and then head for shore. Brian are you ok? You were going full blast and then you just smacked into the water.
I cracked and bought David's Synchro 104L, Gary kindly hooked me up with a very nice 5.0m sail. It was my first time sailing a smaller board. I was surprised at some of the similarities and difficulties. If I could get it pointed in the right direction I could just jump right in the straps, but if I didn't have any speed I just wobbled around like it was my first time. I can tell that jibing that board is going to be much harder than 144L. There was definitely a speed difference : ) and the amount of control I had was just what I knew I needed.
David and I went to Durand Sunday not expecting much. I called the windline. The wind came in gusting just shy of 30mph. I wasn't going to go out, but then peer pressure caused me to put my freezing wet suit on. David went out and then the wind died before I ever made it. The weather forcasters really screwed things up sunday grrrrr.

I had a good time sailing 4.5 Saturday. I measured 30knt gusts on my wind meter. It was not sustained though, it was really puffy. I was happy to be able to get a few decent runs in those conditions. I still am not in the straps though. David gave me some good tips I need to remember while I am out there.
Brian told me he was ok and he had hurt his back earlier in the day doing work around the house.
I was not cold at all Saturday, but I need to get some head covering for cold days coming up. Any suggestions on what to get and were to get it?
Matt
P.S. I sold my sailboats Sunday, so there will be no more cheating on windy days.

Mikeyz,
That was a wicked catapault I took there. . I haven't had one like that in a while, which I'm grateful for as I don't bounce back from them like I used to. I thought I may have hit bottom at the time, but when I stood up the water came up to my stomach. It felt like I hit something rather large with my fin ,and as I looked around in the water, imagine my surprise when I see a 14 inch dead fish. It was a fresh kill and I'm surprised it wasn't sliced in half . The seaguls were already circling above waiting for me to get out of the way. That's my fish tale for the weekend and I'm sticking with it.
It was a gusty day at Long Pond. Hamburg was probably the better choice, as usual.
Matt, get the fleece lined neopreme hood (not realy a hood) by pro motion. Dan may still have some available. Its quite warm and not as awkward as some.

MikeyZ, Brian & crew,
First off who is "hippie guy"? Gary made the right choice with staying in Rochester this weekend because Hamburg was almost the same as the past weekend, however just notched down a little. Carbon, Windkid, QLW Dan, Joe (don't spell it Hurburt), Dick Miller & myself all made the drive for some 4.2m-3.8m sailing. Again very big waves and swift current all but a few took a ride on the Siberian express past the rock pile into the boat launch.
The wind direction was a bit side off so the inside was a little light which is why many got stuck in the rip current. One hand held meter was gusting to 38mph even one kiter went out for a short session but I think he spent more time off the water than on it. It was his OFF the water that was impressive, jumps I would guess surpassed 30 feet in the air.
The rain came in around 5:00 and shut the wind off. Back in Rochester at night the wind picked up on the Lake, Oswego had wind gusts to over 60MPH just around midnight. Good thing it wasn't daylight or I may have had the pressure to go out.
I tried Webster Sunday afternoon 5.8M but got nowhere fast I think this is the last of bare foot sailing.
Brian, What size gear were you on on the pond with?

Mike und Matt,
Here's the skinny on Hamburg.
The wind arrived in the early in the afternoon, quickly gusting to 40mph imitating last Saturday, however it was somewhat offshore at times. Dan, Dick, Rick, Keith, Joe and myself made up the Rochester contingent. Jim, Andy, Greg and one unknown made up the Buffalo boys. 4.2 was the most common sail, some 3.7's and a 3.8 as well. The boards were generally in the 70-86 liter range with the exception of Greg's 117 Exocet. Fins 22cm to 28 cm. The shore break was one testosterone milkshake, sorry Matt, I mean the waves were stacked about 6 feet from each other, with no sense of humor, like angry ranks of engineers trying to breach the walls of Jericho...opps sorry again. Anyway we haven't had a chance to analyze the data from bouy 03928 yet, I'll get back to you later. Offshore the waves had a bad habit of dropping you like an engineer drops a kitten out of a two story window....opps sorry again.
p.s. I was glad I didn't die.

What happened to Bill at Hamburg? He's not right.............But he can create a vivid literary landscape in one's mind with his descriptive and cryptic narratives. I believe in the old times this was called "weaving a yarn, or tale or something like that". Here's what literary critics worldwide are saying about Windkids sailing reviews: The New York times says "Windkid grabs the imagination and doesn't let go!". USA today raves "Windkid's manic prose is a thing of genius". People magazine exclaims "more spell binding than Britney Spears antics"! The Fairport Baptist Home newsletter rights "Windkid is a kook, and what is that windboard thing?". The Midwest Sprout Farmers Almanac says "tell that wind cowboy to get back in the barn". Ken Jones says "Windkid? He's a big dog now..........". My boredom hangs in the air like an engineers'dropped-kitten-saving parachute (sorry Matt). Can you tell? Windydoug

What Ken really said was that, consuming large quanities of both Lake Erie and Lake Niagra before putting pen to paper can be unpredictable if not darn funny to say the least. For the local folks who seem fixated on Poo Pond, just because the dog's all claim it is a great sailing site doesn't make it a great sailing site. Remember these guys all learned to sail on 12' plus skinny boards. If you are looking for gusty and choppy conditions and can live without the multiple mouthfulls of poo and seeping goo in your boots the club also offers gusty choppy conditions in a SW. w/ water that you can actually see your feet through. Saturday I arrived in my company dump truck supreme windsurfing vehicle (my truck was getting a new tranny) to find Art, the eye doc, Bruce, a newbee, and another experienced sailor whoose name I never caught. The direction was WSW gusting in the thirties. The chop was moderate, the water was CLEAN, and quite shallow. Most were sailing 5.7's so I rigged 6.5. (don't ask) Planned better than 80 percent of the time and actually had a great session. Oh, and Brian, sure it was a fish?

If any of you have ever seen the movie "Anchorman" you might remember the scene where a disheveled and broken hearted Ron Burgundy goes to his best friend's restaurant for a steak. His best friend serves him a plate of cat poop and demands that Ron eat it. Ron breaks down crying and exclaims, "I don't care. I don't care, I'll eat the s**t!" Well that is how I feel when I surf at Long Pond ... ok it isn't THAT bad. When you guys say talk about "the club" are you talking about Canandaigua?? I would have went there but it looked like the wind was going to be better further west.
The Water Authority asks about "hippie guy". I first met hippie guy two weekends ago while rigging up at The Pond. He biked up on an old bike, wearing an old blue wetsuit, and it looked like he hadn't shaved in a while (and by "a while" I mean 1 year). I first thought a younger Bill N. had discovered time travel and came from the past to surf epic futuristic waves in Western New York. He brought his wetsuit, surf board, rig, and even a bicycle - all from the 70s. There was only one problem, he arrived at Long Pond and not Hamburg. ... sorry I am bored at school ... I have no idea who "hippie guy" is, other than that he was an enthusiastic sailor and he liked to keep it old school. Pretty knarley if you ask me.
Cheers mates!

Windydoug,
Thanks for the reviews, you're too kind. Now that you mention it the kitten would have had a parachute, or at least a bungee cord.
For the record it was Dan jumping that wave on the pics from Sat. Rick jibing and my main man,"crazy Greg" getting trashed in the shore break, the shots were supposed to be sequential. I have several pics of Joe H. hidden in a locker at the Rochester Airport that I'm saving for later unless certain monetary demands are met, 'nuf said. So what's the story for Wednesday? Seneca? Canandaigua, The Pond, or Hamburg? What's the consensus out there? More importantly who's taking off from work and heading out?

So far I'm able to leave work at 2pm tomorrow. Looks like Canandaigua might give me the most TOW. Any other suggestions?

I am heading to Seneca if the wind is up. While I think Canandaigua is good Seneca is way better in my opinion. Much broader area to get clean wind + the swell gets bigger so a bit more fun to rideoverall. I am going where the wind is the next few days, I may even windsurf a bit. I will travel to the East end of the lake if anyone wants to split gas. I Really like riding at new places.

I agree.. Seneca looks like the place to be today. Don't think I will make it though. I, like Doug, will be heading out with the kids for some Halloween fun... Should be a nice night for that.
Rick, since it was 5-35 on Saturday at the pond I used my fish and hifly with the 6.2M. I had a hard time downhauling with my back, so I didn't feel like rigging another sail.

Pay no attention to Ken, he is in his political campaign as "Grand Po-Bah" (not to be confused with "Poo Pond") of the "Wrong Beach Club"
Sure some of us including me consider the "Pond" as a last choice for sailing but I have spent hundreds of hours honing my skills there and still choose it when I need a fix. In the early years there would be 30 plus cars parked along the road with people rigging. Jumps were plenty and even a couple of guys attempted forward loops there. For many The Pond is a short ride for others Daiguia is close.
In years past Buffalo sailors would come to the Pond in the spring to sail because Erie was either still ice jammed or bubbled due to the cold water, even Steve Howie would travel to the Pond for strong solid winds. It has its advantages for those learning to jibe because it forces one to jibe in each short pass compared to other locations where one would sail 3/4's of a mile before jibing. The more you jibe the better you get!
I trust no matter what water site people picked for sailing at last Saturday all were sailing with a smile on their face. So if there is a personal issue with a given puddle keep the comments to yourself or I'll ask Doug to remove your photos from the web site that depicts you on The Pond.
Back to what this post is for. I decided to save my day on the water this week for tomorrow at Webster Park. I was considering Erie or Seneca today with the warmer temps but as stated the closer drive sometimes is the deciding factor. It will be difficult in the gale winds and cold but the rewards will also be great. Stop by to watch even if it gets to crazy for yourself we may need someone there to pick up the pieces.

Keep in mind that DLS kicks in this weekend. For most of that means no sailing after work. As for Webster today,, I'll be there if I can get out of work by 2:00 or 3:00. If it is under my 50 deg limit and everyone is in full battle gear,,, I'm out. Just don't like sailing with all that rubber on.
Leave a message please!!

Dear Brother Hypocrite:
So sorry if my feeble attempt at humor went over your head.
Perhaps someone of your stature should try to keep the personal attacks to one self.
In addition "So if you have a personal issue with a given puddle keep the comments to yourself." ie" "wrong beach club"
Peace Bro, G.P.B.

Okay, guys..........meet outside after school at the backstop and duke it out. Okay? Loser gets pants in front of the girls. Not here on the forum...........cool? The forum is all about the Jim King vibes of good times, waves, wind, and hot air. Sail where you want, when you want, on what you want, with who you want. We are all good guys here, no bad guys. We should all know each other well enough to know each other's limit. The no fun part about running this online spot....... WD

Sorry Teacher, You should have seen us on the ice rink together. Poo-Bah, I mean Ken hit the nail on the head when he correctly stated. "So sorry if my feeble attempt at humor went over your head." I will stay after school and not windsurf today. H2O Rick
