Hey Guys, Thursday was our last day out on the water down in Hatteras. It was a cold day and we were slow about getting out, but by 1pm I was out on the water with 103L and 5.0. It kept lightening up so I switched up to 6.0 and then to a 7.0 on the 144L which ended up being perfect. Much of that week had been spent on a 103L or smaller boards and I hadn’t put my 144L to work in probably 3 days. When I got on it I couldn’t believe how huge it felt. It made me think of what a journey I have had on that board. When I first bought it I was nervous about how small it was and how I had to be so careful about where I put my feet (compared to the longboard back in Denmark). I learned how to sail in rougher water on Ontario on that board, sailed overpowered in 30mph with a 6.0 on Canandaigua, learned how to get into the footstraps, got a little air, and wiped out hundreds of times practicing jibing on that board. Needless to say I love that board.
Around 5:45 I came in from a terrific session; there was just enough sunlight to de-rig and pack the gear up. I think all three of us were really really happy with Hatteras. We were there for 12 days and on the water for 10 of those days. Each day we had on the water we were out for 4 hours or more. I had one 7 hour day. We used everything we brought from 3.8m – 8.5m and from 69L to 170L. We also used our bodies - Alan froze his ass off, I have some bruises and my biceps are spent (I think I need to shorten my harness lines), and Gary bruised his ribs after the first week, this caused him pain every time he down hauled his sail. For most regular people doing regular sports they would take a break on the side lines. We never noticed what was happening to us. I have no idea how I got bruised and I don’t even remember the last time I did something that caused me to get a bruise. Windsurfing gives us energy on and off the water. You find parts of yourself that you did not know existed and because of this you return home a fuller more collected and complete person.
Friday morning I woke up at 5am after 6 hours of sleep, I drove 14hours to get to Rochester, and after unloading some gear at Alan’s house I went to a costume party and danced my butt off until 330am. After being awake for 23hours I fell asleep, woke up at 10, went back to my friend’s house to help clean up the mess. I then drove to my parent’s house in Rome, NY to celebrate my dad’s birthday. I should have been exhausted but I felt fantastic and my parents were amazed at how much energy I had. I am one of those people that absolutely needs 8 hours of sleep but I blame all that energy on 10 days of solid windsurfing.
So guys, are we gonna get wind soon? Monday perhaps? It is getting cold up here and I am gonna try and do something about that by maybe buying a used dry suit from someone. Does anybody have a dry suit that they would let me use for a few sessions if I give them a couple of bucks?
Cheers,
- mike
