I checked out Sodus Point today for the first time. There was a wicked NNE wind that was almost dead onshore. Pat who lives in Sodus was kiting on a 8 meter kite without a problem. I rigged a 4.5 and gave it a shot. The beach at Sodus is much longer than at Montana otherwise the launch is about the same. Predictably I got my morning rinse trying to punch out into the wind through an endless series of breaking waves as well as providing some comic relieve for the locales. Fortunately for me Pat's mate arrived. She was frustrated to be stuck on shore since she is expecting her first child. Apparently she windsurfs as well as kites and she suggested that I might want to try the Bay. From the parking lot at the beach it's a short walk to a small sandy beach adjacent to the Coast Guard station. So hey, what the hell, I grabbed my gear and walked across the parking lot to the beach. I was immediately greeted by a Coat Guard official who informed me that the beach was officially closed so, windsurfing there would not be a problem...how cool is that? He also warned me that the water was shallow, sandbars etc, and that he would keep an eye out for me. Meanwhile Pat who was on the lake kited down the channel on some nice humpbacked rollers. Naturally I had to give it a go. There is a wind shadow right where the CG Station is but it is easy to walk beyond that to the wind line. Strange ribbon like 2 ft waves span out there near the bar that are kinda fun. It was choppy to a degree but since you are sailing along the line it was not a problem, even had low key chop hop potential. On the eastern shore where there is another set of sand bars and there is a visible wind line which provides a real sweet jibatorium. Eventuall the rain came and I wrapped it up. When I left Pat was still ripping it up.In any case I felt that it Sodus might be a good choice in the right conditions.

I surfed the CG station today in the bay. Some swells reached 4ft coming out of the channel. Rides were short - but clean. Going to get a long board this week and hit it some more this fall. Pats a great guy - Just saw him in Geneva recently.

Adding on to the Sodus narrative:
Headed out there around noon today (Sunday) on some promising steady NE at 20 on the weatherbug lighthouse meter. Bill, Joe, and Ken joined it. The idea was that the wind and pier were similar to Montana for getting out on Ontario, and if that didn't work out we had an alternative site on Sodus Bay to scout out and rider per Windkid's post above. Arriving at 1 and Bill rigging 6.5 after wind dropped and made 5.8 a no go. I hurriedly rigged a 6.6 and 95l to join him as he looked to be doing pretty well on Ontario. The conditions were marginal for me to go but I worked my rig up on plane for a few runs. Joe joined us on 5.8 as I headed in for a bigger board and fin. It was at this point that everything seemed to get flukey. The wind seemed quite east and you had to sell your soul downwind to get planing. I gave it a go anyway on the bigger board and fin and had some success (and practice ) working everything out of my rig. That lasted 15 min or so and I called it a day at 5th St. down the beach. All involved were bummed it didn't work out but it was good to be out in the wind for a bit with friends. The site has good potential for due NNE or N as Bill stated. The sandbar looks interesting for creating ramps. I just checked out the Durand meter, and it is currently going 20. Huh, but look at that.....from the time I hit the water in Sodus until around dinner time the wind went East at Montana as well.
