FYI
Just in case anyone is wondering why the heck the Seneca sensor is still down, it took a full blown lightning strike during the big boomer that went through several weeks ago.
All of the electronics have already been replaced, and a full set of new weather vane equipment is on its way. Hopefully it will be back up in a week or so.
If anyone wants to hold the ladder or put their tongue on the power supply to check it, let me know. Extra help always welcome!

Hey Kel,
Since you seem to be the meter repairman for Iwindsurf I was wondering if you have any pull in the placement of new sensors?
It would be great if we could get a meter down East Bay Rd. way. Perhaps on one of the houses that I noticed just east of the launch while walking (surviving) a long the beach.
Just put a post up when you need someone to hold the ladder. If I can get away I'd be willing to help.
Thanks, Ken

Hi Ken,
I have talked to the iWindsurf person in charge of new sensors about putting a meter on Oneida. It seems they need about 10 to 15 new subscribers to justify a new installation. This can be offset by having someone or a business sponsor a sensor, ie a restaurant or business that might benefit from bringing more sports enthusiasts to the site. I think it costs about $1200 to $1500 depending on the installation.
Then there is the issue of finding the location, somewhere with access to a phone line or Internet connection.
I havent been to E-Bay yet - not sure if the people in the area would like to see more wind-junkies show up. What do you think?
If you are serious about helping at Geneva, send me an email at kelshipman@aol.com and I will let you know when I get the equipment in.
Thanks Kel

I am sure some successful area business would love to sponsor weather stations. Or we could pool all of our bottle refund money and get a sensor installed.
No offense to Iwind/kite/sailflow, but couldn't we, for a lot less money ,buy our own sensor, do the leg work of finding location and host with connection and then link it up to weatherunderground? Seriously. I am sure Long Pond Steve would have no issue with a sensor being installed on his house. If he doesn't have the cleanest fetch for a sensor I am sure he could convince a neighbor.
I am only a fledgling weather nerd so I am not sure of sensor type and cost but it seems doable. Being honest, we have some seriously intelligent nerds with know-how that windsurf and kite around here. That is a compliment to our tribe of wind powered fanatics. WD

By the way,
Our trusty Seneca wind meter gave its last report before the fateful lightning strike, on the same day Ibex survived the storms during the swap meet. It took one for the team and distracted mother nature while he swam for shore.
Actually, it kept giving reports until a couple hours after Ibex's ordeal.

That's what we did here.. nwkite.com/forums/t-12359.html&highlight=rooster+rock+sensorpdxgreen.com/RoosterCam.aspxI know there is more people in PDX and HR but every little bit counts. For Seneca Lake, how about the hotel there? Advertise the view? As for help with installation, after Sept 9th, let me know. ED

If you search "Personal Weather Station" project or wunderground, you can find some pretty in expensive solutions to tracking wind and other data online.
I havent set one up, but it looks like you can go as low as about $200 and get it hooked up to the internet.

PS - I am planning to go out to Geneva / Seneca Lake Monday morning to repair the sensors if anyone is free and wants to give a hand.

Great video trailer for a new windsurfing video due out in Sept, Great sound track also. www.fourdimensionsmovie.com/Regarding discussions on the wind meter, I had spoke with Iwindsurf regarding the Durand meter and was given permission to move it a few years ago (so much for my work ethic) Hedges Restaurant agreed for us to move it there however there was issues with location and wind shadows from trees etc. If we do anything with that meter we need to at lease get it off the two-story building to the east of the new three-story building to the west directly blocking the meter from any wind. Kel, I know both the people in the current Durand house and the one to west who will allow us to put it up on her house. Seems you're a little more up to speed than I was in the past. I'll offer assistance to get this kick started. Another idea is adding a wind meter to the forest lawn camera site there is already access there. Haven't been on the (H20 [much] Rick)

I second Ricks enthusiasm for the four dimensions movie trailer. Some great camera work. The Windsurfing Movie 2 is supposed to be coming out within the half year as well.
I'm in for any help I can be moving the Durand meter over to the three story house. I started checking out weatherundergorund.com at the direction of Kels post above. Looks pretty affordable if we all chip in a little cash and our individual skills. Something out EBay way (probably not on property above the cliffs....they have to mess with the wind) or Long Pond. DIscussion/debate about this is would be good. Perhaps a meter on a house between Fairhaven and Chimney Bluffs? Would assist Kiters and Windsurfers..... Good to see H2O Rick posting. WD Doug

Hi Rick/Doug,
Sure, I would be glad to help move the Durand meter. Basically, just need access to a phone line, so the unit can call into the mother-ship.
Probably starting with a PWS for Long Pond and E-Bay/Fairhaven is the way to go. Once we have the actual locations, then we can pick the hardware and communication method that best suits it.
I put up the new hardware on the roof of the Chamber building in Geneva yesterday. But the new computer installed last week was fried again - bad luck or something. New computer coming, hope to get it installed Wed or Thurs.
Maybe some south wind this week!! crossing fingers and toes!
