Big Winds, bigger gusts.......
Shortboard Joe, T the Technician, and Windydoug at Long Pond.
Teddy was the early man on a 5.2 till it went west, and died. Joe arrived, was gonna leave, but wind arrived again. I arrived shortly thereafter and we all sailed 4.7/8 until the average was too high and the gusts were killing us. Some knucklehead bought a wind meter that only goes to 30 mph, so I am not sure what the wind speed was.
While re rigging (we all went down to a still overpowered in the gusts 4.2) on the lawn side of Edgemere we were getting wet from the spray of breaking waves. It truly was as nuclear (or nucyaler as W would put it) as I have ever seen Long Pond. Spray was blowing off the tops of breaking waves, and the Pond looked hazy to windward as if it was raining. And their were waves. Small sure, but they were waves. I am not one to brag (brag coming), but when the wind would occasionally gust from the south and my eject button wasn't blinking I was able to get a couple pretty nice ramps that were still rolling WSW. I'm no Josh Angulo, but I was able to get some respectable Long Pond hang time.
Wetsuits w/o gloves or hoods did the trick and T looked pretty comfortable without booties.
We didn't escape unscathed however. Joe split a dead fish in half with his fin and got thrown, We all blew up a couple times, and I managed to go through my sail on my last run. The reason it was my last run was that I had realized my mast wasn't put together all the way. I have a half inch crack on the bottom of the top section of mast. Off to Shortboard Joe's house for some mast shortening, and my 4.2 is off to Hatteras with Long Pond Steve next week on his trip south.
The session ended at about 6:30 when holding a boom any longer was not an option.
