Wind folk,
I got out at Long Pond around noon on Saturday and stayed around for as long as I could hold on ( I also had to get home to my new, beautifully installed Ken Jones Inc. kitchen).
I sailed with Hockey Dan, Big Kenny, a couple of buds of his giving stand up sailing a shot for the first time. Hockey Dan of course is the Long Pond regular who wears a full hockey face-mask to protect his noggin, and Big Kenny is an RWS forum member who was so named on this day because of the size of his gear(Ultra Cat and 4.9), and the fact that he was big enough muscle wise to hold on and blast back and forth in some serious wind. BIG stoke coming from Kenny.
Anyhow, winds averaging 23-26 MPH and gusting over 30. I should have bought the bigger wind meter Joe!...mine only goes to 30. I sailed 5.2 and a 95L screamer to get me through the occasional lulls around 18 mph. It was muscle man sailing in the gusts however and to the intrepid fisher folk on the shore I must have looked like a bobble head doll on the dash of an off-road truck being buffeted on top of the chop. When the wind ramped up to its eventual peak, I was able to sail 4.7 and Mistral Wave 87L for about 30 minutes. The water is high right now on the Pond, and a few floating hazards did exist...Carp and Logs mostly. A full wetsuit is all that was necessary to stay warm. Kenny's buddies were hearty and wearing no more than swim trunks.
It sounds like Ken got out on Canandaigua for a session with Hugh and Jim Bell. How did the Hamburg bunch fair? Did any kiters get out?
Till next time,
